‘Nobody’ takes the action of ‘John Wick’ and adds a sense of humor

I’ve often said that the “John Wick” films are some of the best action films of the past decade. So, when I saw that Derek Kolstad, one of the writers behind that franchise, had written the new action comedy “Nobody,” starring Bob Odenkirk of “Better Call Saul” fame, I was intrigued.

In fact, I was intrigued enough to make just my second trip to a movie theater in 2021, and I’m quite glad I did, because the movie mixes the over-the-top action of “John Wick” with a more tongue-in-cheek attitude to deliver a gratuitously violent good time.

I’m sure there are going to be plenty of comparisons to “John Wick,” but I think there was also some inspiration derived from “The Equalizer” as well. I will often critique movies for being unoriginal, but I’m okay if you take inspirations and make them your own, and that is exactly what Kolstad and director Ilya Naishuller (“Hardcore Henry”) did with “Nobody.”
