Growing up, Jim Southerland idolized his older brother, Charles.
Anything Charles did, Jim wanted to do.
So, it was no surprise that when Jim saw the winds of war blowing his way in the early 1950s, he joined the Navy – just like Charles did years earlier.
“Charles served during World War II. Daddy served in Korea,” Jim’s son, Mark Southerland, said. “Daddy knew he had to go, and he knew he wanted to join the Navy like Charles.”
