    William John Summers, 83, of Austin, Texas, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021, in St. Davids South Austin Hospital, after having kidney dialysis for three years and fighting a courageous battle with cancer for six months.John was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Perry to Inez Hunter Grantham. He graduated from Taylor County High School in 1956 and immediately joined the United States Air Force. Tech Sergeant Summers proudly served his country in many locations, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning many medals, including a Bronze Star.After 20 years in the USAF, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Denver, Colo., for 20 years.In 2003, John and his wife, Rochelle, returned to Austin, Texas for their real retirement years. John was a Christian, growing up in Burton Baptist Church (now Crosspoint) in Perry.While living in Austin, Texas, he was dedicated to service to his Lord and church, Manchaca Baptist.He was preceded in death by: his wife of 62 years, Rochelle Simpson Summers (December 2019); his parents, Inez and J.D. (Buddy) Grantham; brothers, Alton and Alven Grantham; and sisters, Elizabeth Allen, Kathryn Applewhite and Della Mae King. Survivors include: his son, Richard Summers, Austin, Texas; daughter Cheryl Koetje, Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Colton Summers, Adam Koetje and Ashley Koetje; four great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Houchin, Crescent City; and aunt, Fannie B Hunter, Jacksonville.Funeral services will be held Friday, July 30, under the care of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Austin.Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cookwaldenforestoaks.com.
