‘Erratic’ suspect tackled after escaping

After initially being taken into custody due to erratic behavior Thursday afternoon, a suspect armed with a knife resisted officers, was pepper sprayed twice and briefly managed to escape custody – making a mad dash for freedom while handcuffed – before being tackled to the ground by a group of officers.

Andrew Townsend, 35, who has a history of mental health detentions and resisting arrest, first came in contact with law enforcement Thursday morning at the Rosehead Park Splash Pad, where an officer observed him drop a (drug) pipe as the officer approached.
