Taylor County Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers for two planned work days in hopes of having the Steinhatchee home completed for occupancy by the end of June, Executive Director Karol Newport Barr said.
“We are working this Thursday, May 19 and next Thursday, May 26, hoping to get the finishing touches completed so the family can move in,” Barr said.
The work days will begin at 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided, she added.
The local Habitat chapter has been working on the home since early 2021, but has faced financial and building supply shortage and price increase issues, as well as needing volunteers to help with the work, Barr said.
“It doesn’t matter what skill level folks have, we can use everyone in some capacity,” she said.
The work plan is to paint and install baseboards, install pre-hung interior doors and complete the handrails.
“There are several other details to complete, but these are the major tasks,” she said.
Anyone who can join the work crew should contact Barr at (850) 584-3838.
Because of limited office hours, Barr asks that callers leave a message so she can get back to you.
“If transportation is a problem, that can be provided,” she said.
Habitat for Humanity is non-profit organization which seeks to provide affordable, sustainable housing for people who cannot meet the requirements for traditional mortgages.
The homeowner must repay the cost of construction at no interest and is required to pay real property taxes and insurance for the life on the mortgage.
“Habitat provides a hand up, not a hand out,” Barr said.
