First-ever shark attack off local coast

Although sharks are commonly sighted in the Gulf waters off Taylor County, reported shark attacks — especially like the one that occurred June 30 — are exceedingly rare.

Prior to last Thursday there had been no confirmed, unprovoked shark attacks in the Big Bend region of Florida east of Franklin County since 1882, according to the International Shark Attack File, a compilation of all known shark attacks — administered in part by the Florida Museum of Natural History.
