Helen Jean Elizabeth Caraway, 83, passed away on July 9, 2022, in Mayo. Jean was born April 6, 1939, in Pontiac, Mich., to Edwin Essex and Esther Haviland Essex. She was a Baptist and a member of New Home Baptist Church in Perry. Jean worked with the State of Florida Department of Health and the Department of Corrections. She loved working as a volunteer at Doctors’ Memorial Hospital’s gift shop. She was a member of the Sandy Toes Red Hats for many years. Jean was preceded in death by: her son, Derrick Hunter; her parents, Edwin and Esther Essex; her brother, James W. Essex; her sister, Donna Washington; and her “fur baby,” Prissy. She is survived by: two sons, Dominick Hunter and Shawn Hunter; grandchildren, TJ Hunter, Aulbrey, Christina and Camberlyn McMichen; cousin, Karl Sheffer; niece, Debbie Cerra (Sam); and two nephews, Jim (Dawn) Essex and Brad (Melissa) Essex; as well as a host of other family and friends; and her two “fur babies,” Ginger and Daisy. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home of Perry with Brother Bobby Hall officiating. Interment services will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m., at the funeral home. All arrangements are under the direction of Burns Funeral Home of Perry.
