    Posted on July 20, 2022

Sidney Herbert “Herb” Hendry, 93, of Perry passed away on July 13, 2022, at the age of 93. He was the beloved son of Sidney Haven and Annie Mae Hendry, born the second child on Oct. 5, 1928. Herb was brother to Ima Lee and Molly Ann. They were a close Christian family and very involved in New Home Baptist Church of Perry. After attending Taylor County High School, he continued his education at Florida State University, completing a degree in P.E. He married Betty Dale Callicott, his school sweetheart. They had two daughters, Karen Elizabeth and Dale Ann. He was a coach and teacher, beginning at Foley School and continuing on to Taylor County High School. He returned to FSU and acquired his master’s degree. Herb was appointed Taylor County School Food Supervisor and retired after 39 and one-half years with the school district. Many students remember him as “Coach Lightnin’.” He was a coach for basketball and baseball, a referee (for basketball), a health teacher, driver’s education teacher, P.E. teacher and worked summers for the City of Perry pool. He was in charge of opening and closing the pool, organizing all swimming lessons, lifeguards, morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Herb sold cookware and included young Karen on his cooking adventures. He and his family were active members of First Baptist Church. He and Betty Dale’s life centered around Christ and his church. He was active in Gideons, and was a charter member of Blue Creek Church, teaching Sunday School, being a church deacon, leading the choir and congregation, and organizing activities for both churches. After their daughters began their own families, Herb and Betty began their new adventures traveling with friends on their Gold Wing motorcycle. He loved being an active granddaddy to his grandchildren. He was blessed with good health and enjoyed sharing his time with them in gardening activities, playing with his dogs and checking on his cows. He was a great mentor to his great grandsons and led them both to Jesus, giving them their first Bibles. Later in life, Herb was a county commissioner, helping to serve the community and a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society. Herb loved the Seminoles and the Marching Chiefs and was a Seminole Booster. He and Betty Dale traveled to the home football games, bringing a daughter and a grandson along for added fun. Herb is survived by his two sisters: Ima Lee Richards (Ralph, deceased) of Tallahassee and Molly Ann Lilliott (Bob) of Perry; two daughters: Karen Elizabeth Hendry and Dale Ann Allbritton of Perry; four grandchildren, Ryan Blue (Alexis) of Jacksonville, Laine Allbritton of Perry, Kacie McCartney (Erich) of Tampa and Hannah Allbritton (Lee Stabler) of Tampa; and four greatgrandchildren, Brandon and Skylar Allbritton of Perry and Tanner and Conner Blue of Jacksonville. Family and friends rejoice in a long life welllived, filled with blessings and accomplishments. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. To noon on Friday, July 15, at First Baptist Church of Perry. Friends may sign the online guest book at www. joepburnsfuneralhomes. com.
