Joseph Allen “Joe” Whitehead, 77, passed away on Aug. 1, 2022 in his home in Carbur.
He was born Jan. 30, 1945, in Salem to Andrew Allen Whitehead and Dorothy Louise Whitfield Whitehead.
Joe honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was a military policeman and received two Purple Hearts during his service.
Joe was a Baptist and a member of Athena Baptist Church.
He worked at Procter & Gamble, later known as Buckeye, in finishing and pulp dry. Joe was known to all at Buckeye as Uncle Joe.
He was an avid hunter and loved nature. He took care of his farm and land; you could always find him outside.
Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Joe was a giver and not a taker.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Andrew Allen and Dorothy Louise Whitehead; his sisters, Patsy Fletcher, Joyce Moates and Jone Pridgeon; his brothers, Ralph, Jimmy, Danny, Tommy and Paul (Pokey) Whitehead; and a great-grandchild, Alexander Lee Trujillo.
Mr. Whitehead is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Susan Stephens Whitehead; his children, Lena (Lea) and her husband, Daniel Trujillo, Rebecca (Becky) and her husband, Wayne Wilbur, and Joleen Whitehead; his brother, Billy Whitehead; his brother-at-heart, Johnnie (Winky) Stephens; his grandchildren, Suzan Trujillo, Joseph Trujillo, Brittani Floyd, Rebekah Floyd, Nicolas Bennett and Madison Padgett; and three great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. At Joe P. Burns Funeral Home with Bro. David McMullen officiating.
