For decades, the Florida Forest Festival has crowned its queen during ceremonies held the first Saturday in October, kicking off a month-long community salute to forestry. However, when Hurricane Ian began barreling toward the state, organizers met with the county and decided “in an abundance of caution” to cancel the pageant for this weekend, and reschedule it two weeks down the road (Saturday, Oct. 15). The decision was made Monday afternoon, but was not released to the newspaper or community until late Tuesday.
