Horne fulfills childhood dream while saving lives

    Posted on October 7, 2022

U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Walter Horne retired after 30 years with the U.S. Coast Guard this year. After four years in the Coast Guard Academy, Horne graduated in 1996 and completed more than 26 years of active duty service.

Eighteen-year-old Walter Horne had just graduated from Taylor County High School (TCHS) when his parents dropped him off at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., on July 7, 1992.

On that very same date 30 years later, surrounded by family members, friends and co-workers at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, Va., Capt. Walter Horne was honored with a retirement ceremony celebrating his 30-year career with the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
