Wanting to follow in his older brother’s footsteps, Edward Viola enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 27, 1956, just five days before his 18th birthday.
He would go on to serve three years of active service, during which time he would see much of the world, ranging from his grandparents’ homeland of Italy to the island of Cuba, where he and his fellow servicemen would help rescue American citizens fleeing unrest there.
Taylor County will honor Viola’s service to his country by raising his memorial flag over Veterans Memorial Park during a brief Veterans Day ceremony planned Friday, Nov. 11, starting at 11 a.m.
