Fred S. Hughes

Fred S. Hughes, 77, passed away on July 7, 2023, at his home in Perry. He was born Aug. 9, 1945 in Lakeland to the Rev. Fred Hughes and Stella Shaw Hughes. Fred honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Fred was a Baptist and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. He had a passion for stray dogs and was known to pick up rescue dogs and give them a forever home. He also had a passion for fellow Vietnam vets and other brothers and sisters in arms. He had a servant’s heart and loved to help people. Fred was preceded in death by: his parents, the Rev. Fred and Stella Hughes; his brother, Chuck Hughes; his aunt, Martha Swordfager; a daughter and a grandchild. He is survived by: his wife of eight years, Kim MattullHughes; five children, Chris Hughes (Christy), Jason Hughes (Christy), Tiffany Canterberry, Kimberly Henry and Jeff Swain; nine grandchildren; and two dogs, Buster and Culley. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 12, at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home of Perry with Brother Paul Nawlin officiating. Interment services will follow in Hendry Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m.
