    Posted on November 1, 2023

Dominic Anthony “Papa” Sandonato, 81, passed away on Oct. 27, 2023, in Perry.

Dominic was born June 18, 1942, in Prezza, Italy, to Antonio Sandonato and Yolanda (Giovannucci) Sandonato.

He honorably served his country in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division from 1963 – 1973.

He proudly wore his veteran’s hat everywhere he went.

Dominic and his wife, Dianna, affectionately known as “Mama,” moved to Perry, and in 2004, they, along with their children, opened Mama’s Italian Family Restaurant.

While Mama was often found in the kitchen making the sauces, you would find Papa out in the dining room joking, laughing and talking with the customers. It was his favorite thing to do. You could also find him in the outdoors taking care of his flowers and garden.

They actively retired from the restaurant in 2011 to travel in their camper, leaving the restaurant in the capable hand of their children, J.R. and Gina.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Dominic was preceded in death by: his parents, Antonio Sandonato and Yolanda (Giovannucci) Sandonato; and two sisters.

Mr. Sandonato is survived by: his wife of 50 years, Dianna Sandonato; his four loving children, Dawn, J.R., Sean and Gina; 19 grandchildren, two of whom were very close to him, Brenden and Vincent; 19 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Francis and Clelia; and a sister-in-law, Cheryl; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

His wishes were to have a private military service at a later date.
