Review: Dreaming big and living large in ‘Secret Life of Walter Mitty’

2014-01-10-The-Secret-Life-of-Walter-Mitty-movie-posterExpanding greatly on the original story’s premise–an everyday man who daydreams of adventure and fame–“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” is a feel good movie with a gentle hand at the helm and an almost poetic sense of style. Its themes border on being too spot on and its sentiment toes the line of saccharine–and some would probably say it crosses over on both counts–but I’d argue that sometimes it’s nice to have a movie unafraid to wear its heart on its sleeve.

Overall, with its family-friendly rating (although I’m betting younger audiences will probably be bored before it’s over), and thoughtful and whimsical style, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” has a message than our tech-driven, Facebook-obsessed world could use. Dreams are great and vital, but converting those dreams into reality is what life is all about.

The film is rated PG for some crude comments, language and action violence.
