Henry Dewitte Hughes Sr., affectionately known as “Deke,” passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024.
He was 78.
He was born on March 19, 1946, in Perry to Lawrence Sr. and Edna Hughes.
Henry was of the Christian faith.
He was a 1963 Jerkins High School graduate who furthered his education attending Suwanee River Junior College in Madison.
Henry retired from Buckeye after 35 years of dedicated service.
He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was the sixth of nine children, and he had a special bond with each of his siblings.
Henry was extremely proud of all his children and their families and fondly celebrated each one of their accomplishments, making sure everyone knew how he delighted in acknowledging them.
His passion was music. He was the section leader of the trumpet section in his high school band and went on to play the trumpet professionally for “The Bravadoes,” a band from Monticello.
Henry enjoyed a good time and all things sports! He avidly celebrated his beloved Florida A&M University, and he was a Florida Gators fan.
He is survived by: his wife, Mary; children, Renee, Vickie Tony, Robin, Kenyatta (Kelvin), Neidra, Deidra (Joey) and Tabitha (Waddie); 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his siblings, Norma, Lawrence (Betty), Tommy (Emma), James (Lorene), John (Jean) and Wilhelmenia; a host of nieces and nephews; and extended family.
Henry was preceded in death by his youngest son, Henry Jr., and his parents, Lawrence and Edna Hughes.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Henry’s life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, at Stewart Memorial AME Church in Perry, beginning at 11 a.m.
