    Posted on December 25, 2024

Joan Frances Huyck, 68, was a longtime resident of Steinhatchee. She passed away on Dec. 18, 2024, after a battle with cancer. She was born on Nov. 15, 1956, to Ray Rocheleau and Frances Secor Rocheleau in Newton, Conn. Joan had four younger sisters and spent her childhood in Pompano Beach, where the family enjoyed sailing together. She moved to Keaton Beach with her family in 1980 where she helped her parents run the Corner Store for many years. She married Charlie Huyck and moved to Steinhatchee where they shrimped and fished for a number of years. She loved being on the water and eating the freshest seafood ever! Afterward, she enjoyed working at Ace Hardware for more than 20 years. Joan was creative, resourceful, resilient and a realist, but somehow still a dreamer. She had a large catalogue of practical, wildlife and horticulture knowledge. She loved music, corny jokes and enjoyed the company of others. Joan is survived by: her three daughters, Dawn Smith, Dena Mosley and Megan Huyck; grandchildren, Shawn Gradwell, David Gradwell and Charlie Doolin; son-inlaw, Jason Mosley; sister, Lydia Mitchell; brothersin-law, Richard Moody and James Whitehead; and nine wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: husband, Charlie Huyck; parents, Ray Rocheleau and Frances Secor Rocheleau; and sisters, Claire Moody and Karen Whitehead. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Jena.
