Local businessman urges school board to proceed with caution while pursuing new 1/2-cent sales tax

Don Curtis, owner of The Forestry Company, expressed concerns about the school district’s proposal to raise the local sales tax by a half cent per dollar, citing, “so many people still hurting from the hurricanes,” as well as the economic impacts from mill closures, a recent increase in timberland property tax assessments and Florida Legislative proposals to shift property taxes to sales taxes statewide.
While the Taylor County School Board is moving forward with its plan to ask voters to approve a new one-half cent sales tax for a 10-year period, one local businessman has urged them to proceed with caution.
