    Posted on July 3, 2026

Charles Edwin Poppell went home to be with our Savior on June 29, 2026.

Born on Feb. 28, 1935, in Perry, Charles was a true Floridian known for his love of the great outdoors. Whether he was sitting around a campfire on a creek bank, hunting or attending summer camp meetings in the mountains, he always found solace and happiness in nature.

He spent more than 50 years serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Of those years, Charles spent them driving children to church on a bus, knocking on people’s doors to share the Gospel, preaching in prisons, teaching Sunday School and doing anything else he could for the Lord.

Charles’ career as a Master Electrician took him far and wide.

He played a role in the construction of Cape Canaveral and worked at the Niagara River Dam in Buffalo, N.Y.

Later, he worked in industrial maintenance at General Motors in Saginaw, Mich., and was involved in the construction of Disney World.

Charles was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Janet Poppell, as well as his parents, Pope and Elsie Poppell, and his siblings, Wanda Colson and Jerry Poppell.

He is survived by: his daughter, Debbie Waters; his sister, Christine Thompson; his brother, Ralph Poppell; and a loving host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.

His passion for the Gospel and his fervent desire to help people come to Christ were the core of who he was.

He touched many lives with his gentle kindness.

A celebration of Charles’ life will be held on Monday, July 6,  at 11 a.m. at Victory Baptist Church in Perry with Brother Danny Harrelson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10 a.m.

We invite friends and family to join us in honoring a truly remarkable man who leaves behind a rich legacy of love and faith.
