Rodger Hanson Spanjer

Rodger Hanson Spanjer, 82, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, in Ocala. Born on Aug. 7, 1943, in New York, N.Y., Rodger lived a life defined by his dedication to family, faith and fostering meaningful relationships. Growing up on the family farms in New Jersey and Florida, Rodger spent his childhood hunting, fishing and riding his beloved horses. Those adventures became some of his favorite memories he continued to share with family and friends throughout his life. Rodger graduated from Dunnellon High School before earning his bachelor’s degree in business from Florida State University (FSU). While at FSU, he was a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity. His education laid the foundation for a successful career as the owner and operator of Big Tire, Inc., located in Perry. Under his leadership, the company specialized in used tire sales and repair, as well as the remanufacturing of specialty tires for large equipment. Rodger’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence were evident throughout his professional life. Rodger was a man of many talents and passions. He especially enjoyed working on his “projects,” which often involved designing, building and improving various properties. His creativity and handson approach brought him great joy and left a lasting impact on those around him. Beyond his projects, Rodger was deeply committed to helping others. Whether through his business endeavors or personal interactions, he made it his mission to serve others with kindness and generosity. Faith played an integral role in Rodger’s life. He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Perry, where he and his beloved wife, Rachael, resided for more than 40 years. After retiring to Ocala, Rodger continued his spiritual journey as a member of Church of the Advent in Dunnellon. His involvement in these communities reflected his unwavering devotion to God and his desire to connect with others through shared faith. Rodger believed that relationships were the cornerstone of a fulfilling life. He carried this philosophy into every aspect of his existence – whether with family members, friends or business associates – and made it a priority to nurture those connections. Known for never meeting a stranger and always seeing the best in people, Rodger had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel valued and appreciated. Rodger by: his is survived devoted wife, Rachael; daughters, Laura Slough of Carlsbad, Calif.; Beth Mariner (Vince) of West Grove, Pa.; Cindy DiGirolamo (Tony) Dunnellon, Fla.; of and Marybeth Gilkes (Bill) of Ocala, Fla.; sister Christina Bates (Scott) of Chicago, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and extended family who will cherish his memory forever. He was preceded in death by: his father, Carl Hanson; adopted father, William Spanjer Jr.; mother, Olga Spanjer; and brother, William Spanjer III. Rodger’s legacy is one of love, service and unwavering faith. His warmth and generosity touched countless lives during his time on earth. May those who knew him find comfort in their memories of this remarkable man who truly embodied the belief that relationships are life’s greatest treasure. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 1 p.m. at Church of the Advent, located at 11251 SW Hwy. 484 in Dunnellon.
