Christine Annette Poppell Thompson

Christine Annette Poppell Thompson was born on Aug. 7, 1937, in Taylor County. She died July 29, 2026. She was the older daughter of Pope and Elsie Poppell. Educated in the Taylor County schools, Christine graduated from Foley School and Taylor County High School. While in high school, she worked part-time at O’Quinn’s Pharmacy. After graduation, she met and married Hal Warren Thompson, also of Perry. After marriage, she moved with Hal to Quincy, where Hal was employed at the Gadsden County Times. While raising four children, Christine spent several years working in the advertising department of the Gadsden County Times. She was later employed in the office at Shanks High School, Quincy. She and Hal eventually returned to Perry, where Christine worked at First Federal Bank. They were faithful members of Grace Methodist Church. Christine was known as an outgoing and friendly person. She had a deep and abiding faith in Christ, and her faith was evident in her concern for others. Her prayer life always included others, as well as her own family. She delighted in her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Her faith also inspired her to become involved in several church and community issues. She participated in a school textbook task force through the Department of Education and testified in Tallahassee against a proposed coal-fired power plant planned for Taylor County. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Hal Thompson; daughter, Julie Wilson; her parents, Pope and Elsie Poppell; brothers, Charles Poppell and Jerry Poppell; and sister, Wanda Colson. Christine is survived by sons, Kent (Alise) and David (Julie) Thompson; a daughter, Marsha (Garry) Chason; and a brother, Ralph (Connie) Poppell. Grandchildren surviving are: Chris and Joey Chason, Patrick, Kendall and Rob Thompson, and Rebecca Vann and Christie Battles. There are 11 greatgrandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews and cousins. Visitation will be on Monday, Aug. 3, from 5-7 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. at Pisgah Cemetery.
