James Curtis Baxter Jr., 85, went peacefully home to his heavenly Father on Aug. 7, 2026. He was known as “Jim” to his friends and coworkers, called “Curtis” by family and “Papa Curtis” by his grandchildren. Born in Perry on June 18, 1941, to James Curtis Sr. and Marchelle Baxter, he was raised in Live Oak, and graduated from Suwannee County High School. Jim served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for six years, stationed mainly in the Mahjove Desert, Calif., from 196065. Jim loved the Lord and was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. He was one of the original employees of Buckeye Cellulose Company/Procter & Gamble, where he worked for 37 years. Jim was an avid golfer and loved to hunt. He was a member of the Perry Masonic Lodge, Perry Shrine Club, Marzuq Shrine Temple, Scottish and York Rites, Perry Elks Lodge, Perry Golf and Country Club and a charter member of Camp Misery Hunting Club. He was a loving, easy going, friendly, hardworking man who liked to joke around with friends. Jim loved his family and was a loving, protective husband. He is survived by: his wife of 46 years, Faye Johnson Baxter; four daughters, Marsha (Don) Parker of Perry, Renee Loman and Tela Baxter of Jacksonville and Tori (Scott) Mullenix of Ponte Vedra Beach; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; one brother, Gilbert (Susanette) Baxter of Gainesville; and two sisters, Sherry Wilson and Susie Stanley of Perry. He was predeceased by his parents, James Curtis Sr. and Marcell Baxter; sister, Latrelle Revis; and brother, Jerry Baxter. We know Jim is in a better place than us. He will be missed, but leaves so many happy, loving memories. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 10, at Joe p. Burns Funeral home at 4 p.m. with Pastor Chris Arnold officiating. Family received friends one hour prior to the service. Interment followed at Pineview Memorial Gardens. .
