The Taylor Senior Citizens Center has launched a food drive in order to return to serving home-cooked meals for its clients and seniors in the community in need.
“We are reaching out to our churches, citizens, businesses and other local organizations to donate goods so we can go back to serving home-cooked meals. The menus have to be approved by an area agency, we we have to provide menus four weeks in advance. Our goal is being serving home-cooked meals in October,” Board of Directors President Michael “Mike” Thrift said. “We need the donations as quickly as possible to start putting menus together for approval.”
Needed items include: vegetables (canned or fresh), fruit (canned or fresh), dried beans, tea bags, sugar, cornmeal, flour, cheese, meats (USDA-approved hamburger, hotdogs, ham, turkey, etc.), bread/buns and desserts.
“We have been serving ‘tv-dinner’ type meals. Our senior clients would prefer home-cooked meals,” Thrift said. “For many of our clients, this is the only meal they eat a day.”
