Donaldson Bridge, a one-lane bridge on County Road 14A crossing the Econfina River, has sparked a significant amount of controversy in the community of Shady Grove over plans by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to replace it with a new two-lane bridge that could cost as much as $3.5 million.
Facing a recommendation from FDOT officials that repairing the bridge was not cost-effective on one side and a petition from residents calling for the bridge to be repaired or replaced with a cheaper one-lane bridge on the other, the Taylor County Commission voted last week 4-1 to endorse the FDOT plan.
