I met the first teaser trailer for 2014’s “Godzilla” with some trepidation, but the atmospheric visuals ending with the iconic roar left me intrigued and hopeful.
Having now seen this newest big-budget attempt to bring Godzilla to life, I have to say that this time they managed to get it right. “Godzilla” is not a perfect film, and there may not be enough actual Godzilla in his self-titled debut, but the King of Monsters provides some solid summer popcorn fun.
The story is a bit convoluted and probably could have used a bit of trimming, but it provides enough surprises, especially in the early acts, that it keeps us going until we get the giant monster destruction we came for.
All in all, “Godzilla” provides a good amount of big monster action coupled in a film that takes itself just seriously enough for us to do the same. Could it have been better? Sure. But is it fun anyway? Certainly.
The film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence.
