Based on the Japanese novel “All You Have is Kill,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher) and Emily Blunt (“Looper”), is a fun sci-fi popcorn flick, full of action and featuring a story that while not especially deep, does provide an intriguing two hours.
Cruise is not a stranger to the sci-fi genre, and while his last film “Oblivion” found few fans, “Edge of Tomorrow” is much more straight-forward (time loops notwithstanding), and should provide the kind of explosions and battles we’ve come to expect from our summer blockbusters.
“Edge of Tomorrow” provides the fun, the intrigue, the action and the big-named actors we want from our summer blockbusters. Sure, there have been better films released this summer, but fun is fun, and “Edge of Tomorrow” gives us fun.
The film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and brief suggestive material.
