The Taylor County Commission is considering applying for a second Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) grant to help fund the construction of sidewalks along Old Dixie Highway, the scene of two pedestrian deaths in the past three years.
Last year, the commission applied for funding assistance through the FDOT Transportation Alternative Program to construct a 1.53-mile sidewalk from Jefferson Street to Southside Park at Plantation Road. In April FDOT approved $328,000 for the project with no cash match required from the county, although work is not expected to begin until 2019 or 2020.
