It’s an undeniable fact that children are cruel. Sure, most of the time they don’t know better, but cruel they are all the same. There’s a great line in “Wonder” — the new film starring Jacob Tremblay (“Room”), Owen Wilson (“No Escape”) and Julia Roberts (“Mother’s Day”) — in which the a character says, “Everyone looks at me the same way at first. Children just don’t hide it as well.”

That character is Auggie (Tremblay), who is about to attend a mainstream school for the first time after being homeschooled by his mother. Auggie isn’t ordinary. His face is quite different after more than 20 surgeries to save his life and bring about some normalcy after he was born with a rare genetic condition.
