Review: ‘Monsters University’ is an enjoyable film which doesn’t live up to Pixar standard

2013-06-28-Monsters-University-movie-posterPixar Animation’s latest offering is “Monsters University,” a prequel to one of its most beloved creations, “Monsters Inc.”

It could be said that “Monsters University” is simultaneously playing it safe financially and dangerous in the terms of creative integrity. And after seeing both the film itself and the box office numbers from its opening weekend, I think both are ultimately true.

Thus, I’m of two minds when its comes to “Monsters University.” On one hand it is funny and entertaining, presenting a new look at beloved characters Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) to see how they became the monsters we first met 12 years ago. On the other hand, if you strip away the typically beautiful Pixar animation and the familiar characters, you’re left with a paint-by-the-numbers college comedy; even worse, it is one that’s been watered down to a G-rated level.

    The film is rated G.
