The Suwannee River Water Management District on Monday presented the Taylor County Commission with a check for $17,701 as payment in lieu of taxes.
The payment in lieu of taxes program was created by the Florida Legislature to help reduce the fiscal impact to rural counties when the state or district acquires lands. Since land owned by the district is tax-exempt, payment in lieu of taxes funds offset the loss of tax revenue when the district purchases property for flood control, water quality, water supply and natural resource protection.
