    Hettie L. Carter

    Mrs. Hettie L. Carter, 90, passed away on June 6, 2020, at her home surrounded by family and friends in Salem.

    Hettie was the daughter of Ruby Lashley Levingston and Dowd Levingston.

    Born and raised in and around the small community of Salem, Hettie was famous for her southern cooking. In years past she worked at the Salem Zoo (Florida Reptile Land) and The Country Kitchen.

    She was a graduate of Salem High School. Hettie was an avid collector of all things treasured. She loved photographs and genealogy.

    Hettie was a mother and grandmother figure in many children’s lives in Salem. She was famous for her chicken-n-dumplings and coconut cake.

    She is preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Melvin Carter; daughter, Irene “Beaner” Lynch; and two brothers, Bo and D.L. Levingston; as well as her stepson, Junior Carter.

    She is survived by: her sister, Myrtice Brown of Tallahassee; her stepson, Amos Carter of Titusville; her son-in-law, Jimmy Lynch of Perry; her cousin/caregiver, Deek McCall Tyler (Stan); four step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, at 3 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home of Perry with Brother David McMullen and Brother Cricket Watson officiating.

    Interment services will follow immediately afterward in Woodyard Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2-3 p.m., At the funeral home.
