    Mildred Carlton Haught

    Meadows Mildred Carlton Haught Meadows, 92, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2023, in Perry. Mildred was born in Taylor County on Sept. 17, 1930. The third of eight children born to Glover and Corinne Carlton, Mildred graduated from Foley Junior High School and Taylor County High School, where she was a star basketball player. She left Perry after marrying William “Bill” Haught, a career military officer, and they traveled the world, living in Germany, Okinawa, Japan and Italy. They were the parents of three daughters, Cheri Haught Abney, Candi Haught Scott and Cari Haught Coats. Bill predeceased Mildred. She moved back to Perry, where she married Jess Meadows, who also predeceased her. In recent years, she had been a resident of Oak Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Mayo. After moving back to Perry, she worked for the Department of Transportation and the Perry Police Department, where she proudly completed her law enforcement certification at the top of her class and as its oldest member. Mildred was predeceased by: her parents; her sister, Edna Carlton Parker; her brother, Fred Carlton; and her two husbands. She is survived by: two brothers, Ralph Carlton of Perry and Cecil Carlton of Pensacola; and three sisters, Reba Carlton Blackshear of Mayo, Anita Carlton of St. Petersburg and Gaye Carlton Register of Perry. Additionally, she is survived by: her three daughters, Cheri Haught Abney of Grapevine, Texas, Candi Haught Scott (Randy) of Perry, Cari Haught Coats (Russ) of Orlando; and four grandchildren, Chelsea Abney of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ryan Abney (Monica) of Houston, Texas, and Kate and Maddie Coats of New York, N.Y. She’s also survived by three great-grandchildren, John William and Gracie Abney of Houston and Liam Bowling of Oklahoma City, along with many nieces and nephews. There will be a

    Celebration of Life graveside service at Pineview Memorial Garden in Perry on Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church at 1100 West Green Street in
