    Candace ‘Candi’ Corinne Haught Scott

    Candace (Candi) Corinne Haught Scott, 69, passed away on June 9, 2023. She was born on Jan. 26, 1954, at Ft. Benning, Ga., to William (Bill) and Mildred (Millie) Haught. Her grandparents were Glover and Corinne Carlton, who were among the pioneering families of Taylor County. Candi attended elementary school in Okinawa, Japan, then Vicenza American High School, Vicenza, Italy, and Osceola High School, Kissimmee, Fla. Candi graduated Florida State University (FSU) in 1974 with a major in interior design with emphasis in historical restoration. She was immediately hired as an adjunct instructor by the university. She headed up restoration projects for the State of Florida’s Department of Natural Resources, including: Torryea State Park, Port St. Joe Constitution Museum, Lignum Vitae Key, St. Marks Lighthouse, Cape Florida Lighthouse and many other projects. While living in Jacksonville, she was hired to teach physics at Stanton College Prep School and was named Florida’s “High School Science Teacher of the Year” in 1993. She also worked at Fermi Lab in Chicago, Ill., for the summer of 1991. Next, she got her civil engineering degree from Florida International University and was employed as a project manager for the Florida Department of Transportation (Ft. Lauderdale), supervising the construction of major road building projects. Candi was next hired by the Department of Defense Educational Authority. She and husband, Randolph (Randy), relocated to Lago Patria, Italy, for her to teach the children of the U.S. Navy. She taught physics and chemistry at the senior high school level. During this period, Candi was accepted to work at CERN (Center European Research Nuclear) in Geneva, Switzerland, the home of the large Hadron Collider. She was one of only a few women to have worked at both Fermi and CERN. She was the first DODEA teacher to be accepted at CERN. She and her husband, Randy, traveled extensively while in Europe, making trips to Egypt, Morocco, Crete, Turkey, Greece, Japan and most all of Europe many times. The pair relocated to Worlington, U.K., in 2012 to teach at Lakenheath Air Force Base in Lakenheath. During this period, Candi arranged for the visit of astronaut Kjell Lindgren to the campus. Candi enjoyed travel, the arts, music and museums, as well as anything relating to science. She is survived by: her husband of 43 years, Randolph; her two sisters, Cheri Haught Abney of Grapevine, Texas, and Cari Haught Coats (Russ) of Orlando; nieces and nephews, Chelsea Abney of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ryan Abney (Monica) of Houston, Texas, Kate and Maddie Coats of New York City, N.Y.; grandnieces and grandnephews, Liam Bowling of Oklahoma City and John William and Gracie Abney of Houston, Texas. There will be a memorial ceremony in Perry on Saturday, June 24, at 10 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, in Perry.
