Jennifer “Jenn” Lakedra Dowdell was an exceptional woman, the epitome of a mother, granddaughter, daughter, sister, niece, aunt and friend. She was known by many names, including “Jenn,” “Kedra,” “Juicy,” “Creature” and “Big Kej.” Jennifer was a Godfearing woman and passionate about being creative, traveling, eating crab legs and spending time with family and friends. Jenn worked at the Okaloosa Correctional Institution for more than a decade and took pride in her work. While there, she was a recruiter and part of the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT). Jennifer poured her heart and soul into her work, and all the people she worked with absolutely admired her. Jennifer was generous, loyal and compassionate. She was devoted to her only daughter, DeAja Tene Ellis, who was her pride and joy. She loved her daughter fiercely, unselfishly and unconditionally. DeAja was everything to her. Jennifer was born on Dec. 10, 1977, to Sharon Simmons and Barney Smith. She is survived by: her only child, DeAja; her grandparents, Alphonso and Bessie Dowdell; her sister, Kenyatta Smith; and brothers, Chivoski Hamilton, Darrin Simmons Jr., and Devontae Simmons. She leaves behind many aunts and uncles, who include: Gerald Dowdell, Marcus Dowdell, Sonya Williams, Bonita Smith and Lester King. Jennifer also leaves an abundance of nieces, nephews and God-children. She was quick to adopt friends as family, and also leaves behind a large “work family” from many state correctional institutions. She was someone who appreciated life and exemplified kindness. She had a contagious laugh, and her spirit brightened any room she entered. Jennifer touched everybody’s lives and made it a point to make all those she encountered feel so important and special. She showed up when it mattered, had your back, gave to those in need and would defend and stand up for her loved ones should the need for it arise. To say she will be missed is an understatement. Jennifer’s viewing will be held Friday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. at Trinity House of Praise in Perry. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. at Mount Olive M.B. Church.
