William “Billy” Moses LaValle, 80, of Perry passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sept. 15, 2024.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1944, in Perry to Norman and Floy Moses LaValle.
Mr. LaValle was a dedicated steward of the land, carrying on his family’s legacy in agriculture.
He graduated from Taylor County High School in 1962. He then served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era from 1964 to 1970 as an aircraft radio mechanic.
Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Florida State University (FSU), earning a Bachelor of Science in accounting. While at FSU, he was a member of the sailing team.
Mr. LaValle held auditing positions with the State Auditor General in Tennessee and Tallahassee before returning to Perry to serve his community.
He and his brother, Jimmy, began a beekeeping operation in 1972, and in 1989, he was elected Taylor County Clerk of Court, serving one term.
Later, he became director of community development and subsequently city finance director, retiring in 2005.
Alongside his city work, Mr. LaValle built a commercial poultry farm, Perryland Farms, starting in 1998, eventually expanding to include cattle and hay production.
Throughout his life, Mr. LaValle was active in the community. He served on several boards, including the Tree Capital Credit Union Board of Directors (1994-2011) and the Taylor County Farm Bureau Board of Directors as Treasurer (1997-2024). He was a member of the Rotary Club, a volunteer firefighter for the Athena Fire Department and a board director for New Hope Cemetery.
Despite his many roles, his favorite titles were “Papa Billy” and “Papa Tractor.”
Mr. LaValle is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Floy LaValle; his wife of 38 years, Connie Gamble LaValle; and his brother, Jimmy LaValle.
He is survived by his four sons: Eric W. LaValle, Richard Heath LaValle (Rachel), Benjamin B. LaValle (Laurel) and Joseph G. LaValle (LaDonna); his eight grandchildren, Conner, Liam, Maybre, Haden, Amelia, Georgia, Fiona and Jessup Moses; along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 20, at 5 p.m. at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home of Perry, with Brother Dan Chaney officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
