Dennis Vern Fike, 80, of Perry transitioned to glory on June 4, 2025. Born in Shelby, Ohio, on June 16, 1944, he was the son of the late Paul J. and Virginia Fike. He was a man of remarkable achievements, both on and off the court, and his legacy lives on in the lives of his family, friends and all who were touched by his dedication and love. Dennis’s athletic journey began at Perry High School in Georgia, where he became a standout athlete, playing an integral role in the Perry Panthers’ perfect 28-0 basketball season, ultimately leading the team to a state title in their respective classification. He was also a force on the baseball field, boasting an impressive .412 batting average and leading the Panthers to a state title appearance. After high school, Dennis continued his education at Valdosta State University from 1962 to 1966, where he made history as the first-ever inductee into the school’s Hall of Fame for dual sports-basketball and baseball. In addition, he became the first position player at Valdosta State to earn AllGulf South Conference honors. Dennis’s legacy, however, extended far beyond his athletic achievements. He was a dedicated educator and administrator, receiving a master’s in guidance counseling and administration, serving in various roles throughout his career, including teacher, coach, principal, dean and facilities management director. His impact in the field of education was profound, and his passion for guiding others was evident in everything he did. Dennis’s love for sports extended beyond his own career; he was deeply involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren, attending and coaching their sporting events with unwavering support and enthusiasm. He was married to Millie, the love of his life, for 57 years. Together, they raised two children, Denny Fike and Angie Fike Thompson, and were blessed with four grandchildren: Zachery Fike, Abbygail Fike, Ryan (Autumn) Thompson and Matthew Thompson. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Paul Fike and Diane Metzger. A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Dennis was a man of faith, service and love. His legacy of dedication to his family, his community and his faith will continue to inspire all who knew him. He is survived by: his beloved wife, Millie, children, grandchildren and many others whose lives were touched by his love, guidance and example of integrity. Dennis’s family is deeply grateful for the incredible legacy he leaves behind. Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, at noon at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home in Perry, with visitation held one hour prior to the service. Interment followed at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may sign the online guest book at joepburnsfuneralhomes. com.
