Vergie Juanita “Hootie” Mixon, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in West Jordan, Utah, at the age of 86. Born on July 9, 1938, in Blackey, Ky., Vergie was the youngest of eight children born to Wardie and Arnie Belle Tolson. She married the love of her life, Robert Lane Mixon Sr., on April 21, 1957. Hootie was known for her exceptional strength and optimistic outlook on life. She loved parties when she was younger, especially when she was “dragged around the dance floor by Lane.” Hoot lived a life full of love and possessed an endearing personality that touched everyone she met. She was known for her stubborn, funny and feisty personality, often delighting in a good tease. Her love for her family was boundless, and she was incredibly proud of her children, many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren, often marveling at how old they were getting – “it’s hard to believe.” Vergie found joy in the simple pleasures of life, from solving crossword puzzles to “just hangin’” and visiting with her loved ones. S he cherished memories of travels around the world during her husband’s military service, sometimes going on trips to places “just so she could say she went.” A true connoisseur of “junk and goodies,” Hoot famously adored them, even if it would make her “this big around.” Her steadfast faith was a cornerstone of her life; she prayed daily for the Good Lord to watch over her and her family, showing complete trust in His plan. Hootie was a proud member of the Red Hatters and Lady Elks, and she passionately supported her husband in the Shriners. She had an open-door policy, famously inviting everyone to “come on down to Florida,” making all feel welcome and loved. For many, including her grandchildren who spent summers there, Vergie’s home was their second home – a place of unconditional love and comfort. She often said she didn’t think she could survive without Lane, as he had always taken care of her. Yet, with her robust spirit and steadfast positivity, she bravely navigated six years without him, a testament to her quiet strength. Vergie will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her family, who relied on her steady presence and loving heart; the profound impact she had will forever be cherished. She is survived by her devoted children, Robert Lane Mixon Jr. (Melody) and Stephen Douglas Mixon (Kristi). She is also survived by her loving niece, Linda Howell (Wayne); her brother, Bill Tolson (Alice); and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Fightmaster. Vergie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Lane Mixon Sr., and six of her siblings. Family and friends will “come on down” one last time to lay Hoot to rest next to the man who called her his beautiful bride for 62 years. Her vibrant spirit, unwavering love, memorable catchphrases, and constant care will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Services will be held graveside Saturday, Aug. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery.
