    Posted on September 17, 2025

Allen “Laney” Delano Freeman, 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sept. 13, 2025. “Laney,” as he was lovingly known, was given his nickname by his first-grade teacher, and it followed him throughout his life – a name that became a symbol of the kindness, humility and quiet strength that defined him. He was a skilled machinist and a trusted auto parts salesman for Perry Auto Supply (NAPA) for 50 years. n the automotive world, if there was a question or problem that needed solving, Laney was the man to see. He carried not just knowledge, but patience, honesty and a willingness to help anyone who came through the door. His work was more than a job – it was a ministry of service, one that earned him lifelong friendships and the respect of his community. Outside of work, Laney’s love of gardening was one of his greatest joys. Each season, he planted with care and tended his garden faithfully, producing an abundance that he freely shared with family, neighbors and friends. His garden was not just a source of food, but a reflection of his heart – generous, nurturing and always looking for ways to bless others. He could often be found outside with dirt on his hands, a smile on his face and a grandchild by his side, teaching them the value of hard work and the simple pleasures of life. Laney’s faith in God was the quiet foundation of his life. He lived it out through kindness, humility and devotion to his family. He was a loving husband, a steady and devoted father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest treasure, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, faithfulness and gentle strength that will be felt for generations. Laney was preceded in death by: his father and mother, James T. and Mildred Freeman; his brothers, Warren (Karen) Freeman, Rudy Freeman and Glen Freeman; sisters, Annie Jean Freeman, June Courtney and Marlene Coxwell; and a nephew, Jimmy Freeman. Laney is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Betty Freeman; his sons, Michael (Marcy) Freeman and Wayne (Imelda) Freeman; his grandchildren, Justin (Danielle) Folsom, Laura Freeman, Laura Gipson, Lesly Portillo, Aileen Portillo, Alyssa Freeman and Chloe Freeman; and his great-grandchildren, Emma Sue Folsom, Waylon Walker and Olivia Gipson. He is also survived by his siblings, Janice (Joey) Taylor and Tommy (Donna) Freeman; and brother-inlaw, John Courtney; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly. Laney leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, and we take comfort knowing this is not goodbye, but “see you later.” Though he will be deeply missed, we celebrate the gift of his life and the eternal home he now enjoys in heaven. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 17, at noon at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home with Brother Jeremey Grey Officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.
