Walter Douglas Poppell, 92, passed away on Oct. 12, 2020, in Tallahassee.
He was born Nov. 13, 1927, in Perry to Hugie Poppell and Nettie Woodard Poppell.
Doug honorably served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of Burton Baptist Church.
He worked with Proctor & Gamble as a Bleacherman for more than 38 years. He was a gunsmith and owner of Flat Creek Gun Repair for 15 years.
Doug was preceded in death by: his parents, Hugie Poppell and Nettie Woodard Poppell; his wife of 72 years, Ava Lee Poppell; son, Gary Poppell; brothers, Warren, Dan and Weldon Poppell; and sisters, Sybil Archer, Era Bell Williams and Nancy Shaw.
He is survived by: his grandson, James and his wife, Tammy Poppell; his daughter-in-law, Ginny Poppell; grandchildren, Suzannah and Chris Ray, and Matt and Kristina Brown; great-grandchildren, Remington, Case, Harli, Autumn, Cayden and Camden; his brothers, Delano and Kenneth Poppell; his sisters, Mary Ann Moulton, Golla McGowan and Racheal Sapp; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Walter D. Poppell Scholarship Fund at Big Bend Technical College for the E & I program. Donations can be sent to Big Bend Technical College with memo line stating, Walter D. Poppell Scholarship Fund.
Graveside service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 a.m. at Pisgah Cemetery. There will be a funeral procession at 7:45 a.m. from Joe P. Burns funeral home to Pisgah cemetery for those that would like to join us.
