    Leon Bryant Akins Sr.

    Leon Bryant Akins Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on Sept. 6, 2025, at the age of 94.

    Born in Ocala, Leon grew up in Crystal River and graduated from Crystal River High School in 1948. A talented athlete, he loved baseball and played on local teams under the guidance of his high school coach, Doc Hudson, who was assisted by pro baseball player Dazzy Vance.

    After high school, he worked as a commercial fisherman and delivered milk.

    On Dec. 30, 1950, Leon married Mary Katherine Akins. Together they raised three children and built a life full of love.

    A devoted minister of the gospel and former member of New Home Baptist Church of Perry, Leon shared his faith and kindness with everyone he met. He also cherished the outdoors, finding joy in fishing, hunting, camping and God’s creation.

    He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur Daniel Akins, and granddaughter, Lori Akins.

    He is survived by: his wife, Mary Katherine Akins; children, Leon Bryant Akins Jr. (Phyllis) and Kathy Lee Akins Forrest (Chris); grandchildren, Matthew Akins, Jolie Akins Madden, Bryant Drew Akins (Eva), Jason Forrest, Sean Forrest (Anastasia) and Joshua Forrest; great-grandchildren, Kya Akins, Brianna Akins, Ophelia Akins, Kaylee Nawlin (Nathan), Kristina Akins, Neenah Maddox and Joseph Mcelveen; and six great-great-grandchildren.

    Visitation was Thursday, Sept. 11, from 2-2:30 p.m. at New Home Baptist Church in Perry, followed by funeral services at 2:30 p.m.

    Burial followed at Pineview Cemetery in Perry.

    Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home & Crematory, Lecanto, Florida.

    Leon will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
